Injectables are a non-invasive and very popular way to add volume and eliminate facial wrinkles. However, in the hands of a person who has little experience injecting faces, injectables can cause an overfilled face or lead to unpleasant side effects. To ensure a treatment goes well, the injector must have a deep understanding of how each type of injectable works. From her practice in Westlake Village, California, board-certified dermatologist Daphne Panagotacos, MD, has some advice concerning your injectables.

For example, dermal fillers come in many formulas. Some are made to add volume, while others are used to reshape certain features. Using the wrong filler can lead to unnatural results. There are different types of Botulinum toxin that vary in molecular size and their ability to prevent muscles from contracting.

Increased risk for side effects

Redness and irritation are common after receiving injectables, but more severe side effects are rare. That said, incorrect placement of Botox® or too much Botox can cause droopy eyelids. Other side effects associated with an inexperienced provider include muscle weakness and allergic reactions.

More likely to have a poor result

Injectables may seem like a straightforward treatment, but an inexperienced injector can make many mistakes if they don’t have a solid understanding of facial anatomy.

For example, not knowing the cause of fine lines and wrinkles can make the injector opt for the wrong product. Not being able to recognize all the muscle groups on the face may cause the provider to inject a neuromodulator into the wrong muscle.

In certain cases, patients aren’t good candidates for injectables at all. Patients who experience muscle weakness in the face aren’t good candidates for neuromodulators, as the treatment would weaken their muscles even further.

Say no to injectable parties and inexperienced providers

A new trend has emerged: some practitioners inject their patients and offer discounts for their injectables during casual parties with drinks and food.

Unfortunately, during a party, the environment isn’t as sterile. This increases the risk for infections, and if someone does experience side effects, there may not be as many tools at the provider’s disposal to help the patient.

During these parties, there’s also a higher chance that the one who injects the substances isn’t a plastic surgeon or doesn’t have extensive experience injecting faces.
