Are you lacking in self-confidence because of facial flaws? Perhaps you have a birthmark, a scar, dark spots, or some other skin blemish. It’s understandable that you want to face the world free of noticeable blemishes: Research shows that improving your personal appearance increases self-esteem and has a positive effect on your personal wellbeing.
Some of the most common skin issues stem from the natural aging process, while others are a product of long-term sun damage. Whatever your concern happens to be, board-certified dermatologist Daphne Panagotacos, MD, has a solution.
One treatment that helps solve a number of skin issues all at one is intense pulsed light (IPL) photofacial therapy. Read on to find out what it can do for you.
What skin problems can IPL treatments address?
IPL is a multi-purpose tool that Dr. Panagotacos uses to smooth away a number of skin blemishes. Skin problems that IPL can minimize, improve, or correct include:
- Scars
- Birthmarks
- Rosacea
- Dark spots from sun damage
- Spider veins
- Wrinkles and fine lines
- Freckles
What happens during an IPL treatment?
Our staff gently cleans your skin and applies a special gel that prevents your skin from getting too warm during the procedure. Next, Dr. Panagotacos uses a handheld device to deliver the light treatment. You’ll feel a brief sensation that’s similar to a tiny rubber band snapping across your skin.
Depending on your cosmetic goals, your treatment may last anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes.
How does IPL work to improve my skin?
IPL delivers ultra-targeted bursts of light energy on multiple wavelengths. The light heats the skin, which destroys the integrity of the cells in the problematic areas. Your lymphatic system flushes the old cells from your body over a number of weeks.
Apart from breaking down the cells that make up your skin flaws, IPL photofacials actively stimulate the regrowth of collagen and elastin fibers within your skin’s layers. Collagen and elastin are the two main building blocks in your skin that keep your complexion looking smooth, firm, and resilient.
What should I know before an IPL treatment?
Dr. Panagotacos provides written instructions for you to follow before and after the procedure. You should avoid the following for at least two weeks leading up to your treatment:
- Direct sunlight
- Tanning beds
- Skin waxing
- Chemical peels
- Dermal fillers
- Drugs that increase bleeding risk
Can IPL treatments cause side effects?
Apart from spending time in the sun, you should be able to resume your normal activities after your IPL session. However, your skin will look and feel like a peeling sunburn for up to eight hours as the skin remodeling process gets underway. You may also experience minor swelling for a few days. Placing a cool moist cloth on the treated area can help.
Don’t use makeup or moisturizer until the swelling recedes. Once the swelling is gone, use a high-quality moisturizer twice a day for at least three months.
Does IPL work for all skin types?
IPL works best on fair or light brown skin. If you have darker skin, Dr. Panagotacos may recommend other facial treatments to help you achieve your goals.
